CHARLES UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES Institute of Economic Studies Essays in Behavioural and Experimental Economics Abstract for Dissertation thesis Author: Mgr. Jindřich Matoušek Study program: Economics and Finance Supervisor: prof. PhDr. Tomáš Havránek, Ph.D. Year of defense: 2022 Abstract The dissertation consists of three papers presenting applications of experimen- tal as well as statistical methods to the topics of behavioural economics. The first paper introduces a series of laboratory experiments in which I apply the experimental methods to a complex decision making problem. The second and third papers present quantitative syntheses of the literature on the classi- cal topics of behavioural economics. The general introduction connects these chapters together. Detailed abstracts for individual papers are presented at the beginning of each chapter. In the first paper, I experimentally examine two complex multi-unit auc- tion mechanisms with an opportunity to communicate and thus collude while comparing these mechanisms in terms of efficiency. Strikingly, allowing for communication increases efficiency in examined auction formats. A cheap-talk collusive agreement resulted in a better allocation compared to the treatments without communication. I hypothesize that complex auction formats makes...
How effective are subsidies for electric vehicles? An evaluation of Czech policy
Čekal, Jonáš ; Pleticha, Petr (advisor) ; Ščasný, Milan (referee)
This thesis deals with the effectiveness of Czech electromobility support. First programs to incentivize electric vehicle purchases were introduced by two Czech ministries in 2016 with grants available until the end of 2021. To estimate the effect of Czech incentives on electric vehicle sales, generalized difference-in- differences design is used. The estimation employs two-way fixed effects model with annual and monthly data spanning over 2015-2021. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland were chosen to serve as a control group with electric vehicle market share and electric vehicle registrations as the dependent vari- ables. The results are ambiguous and do not suggest a clear link between the investigated variables and the subsidies. A more detailed dataset would be needed to conduct a definitive impact evaluation. JEL Classification O31, O38, R40, H25 Keywords Electromobility, Incentives, Subsidies, Rebates, Policy evaluation Title How effective are subsidies for electric vehicles? Incentives for Blood Donation in the Czech Republic: Case Study of Prague
Bošková, Aneta ; Chadimová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Pertold-Gebicka, Barbara (referee)
Blood shortages prompt policymakers to find ways to increase the supply of blood to meet the health sector's demand. The aim of this thesis was to exam- ine the effects of selected incentives on blood donation. Using a questionnaire for blood donors, the data was collected at a transfusion station in Prague. The questionnaire focused on hypothetical choices of donors when offered a certain type of incentive. The probit model and linear probability model were cho- sen for analysing the hypothetical effects of incentives and determining the donors' significant characteristics. The results showed that the vast majority of respondents would donate as often as they currently do with any of the selected incentives. A small proportion of donors would, however, respond to the incentives. The financial incentive or small gifts would discourage a cer- tain proportion of donors; on the other hand, offering a voucher to pharmacy would motivate a small proportion of donors. Both probit and linear probabil- ity model revealed several important donor characteristics that affect attitudes towards incentives. One of the most significant characteristics was gender; the financial incentive would discourage women significantly more than men. The Impact of Incentives on Electric Vehicle Sales in the European Union
Tláskalová, Andrea ; Polák, Petr (advisor) ; Havránková, Zuzana (referee)
This thesis provides a comprehensive analysis of electric vehicle incentives and investigates their impact on the uptake of electric vehicles within and beyond the European Union over the period of 2010 to 2019. Depending on the kind of benefit they provide and their timing, the incentives are divided into one-time monetary, recurring monetary, and non-monetary incentives. To properly evaluate the effect of incentives, a fixed effects and difference-in-differences methods are employed, allowing us to control for unobserved factors affecting the electric vehicle market. A fixed effects analysis revealed a significant positive effect of one-time monetary incentives on battery electric vehicle sales, and a significant positive effect of both one-time and recurring monetary incentives on plug-in hybrid electric vehicle sales. Additionally, when considering the effect of individual incentives, the most important ones were found to be rebate and point-of-sale tax incentive. A difference-in-differences analysis confirmed a statistically significant effect of rebate on the sale of battery electric vehicles. Current state of contingency management applied on pregnant women - drug users in selected services for drug users
Meruňková, Tereza ; Šťastná, Lenka (advisor) ; Sudíková, Andrea (referee)
Background: More detailed usage of incentive therapy (IT) in the Czech Republic is still unknown. On the contrary, theme of drug issues among female users and issue of usage of drugs during their pregnancy period is becoming much more actual in the field of addictology. Particularly, the public is prejudiced and shows stereotyped behaviour against drug pregnant addicts. The first attempts to combine IT and the specific group of drug pregnant addicts have been started by low-threshold facilities like XTP Sananim in Prague and Centrum U Větrníku in Jihlava. Objective: The aim of this thesis is to map the current situation of IT in that facilities which engage in programmes for drug pregnant addicts based on the IT. Methodology: The data were gained by using semi-structured interviews whose respondents work in low-threshold facilities. In the analysis elements from the theory of addictology were utilised. Results: On the basis of statements of interviewees was found that two chosen facilities has clearly defined program of IT and the structured working course with their clients. The both differ in terms of remuneration clients. The main reason, why to start to work on the basis of IT, is a high number of contacts with drug pregnant addicts, which was always the initiative of one worker in a facility...
Using Carrots to Bring Peace? Negotiation and Third Party Involvement
Klimešová, Martina ; Plechanovová, Běla (advisor) ; Bureš, Oldřich (referee) ; Sjöstedt, Gunnar (referee)
Title: Using Carrots to Bring Peace? Negotiation and Third Party Involvement Author: Martina Klimesova 284 p. (+references and appendices) March 2011 How to make peace? This dissertation answers what impact third party incentives have on peace negotiation, more specifically on negotiation strategies in internal armed conflicts based on self-determination grievances. This study further assesses when the ripest time for the employment of incentives is, and in what way external incentives have an impact on possible negotiation asymmetries. Incentives in the following negotiation processes were analyzed: GoSL-LTTE in Sri Lanka (Eelam, 2002-03; 2006), GoI-GAM in Indonesia (Aceh, 2000-03; 2005), and the GRP-MILF in the Philippines (Mindanao, 2001-08). The findings indicate that those third party incentives which are linked to the core conflict issues are most likely to have some impact on the negotiation, but that committed pro-process leadership by the conflicting parties is also a necessity. The research also indicated that third parties have only limited options in employing incentives that can have an impact on the core conflict issues; and that, in any case, they are rarely willing to pursue such options. Committed strong leadership, presence of ripeness (far more frequently stipulated by an MHS than MEO),...
Incentivy a prosociální jednání mužů a žen
Pulcová, Eliška ; Stroukal, Dominik (advisor) ; Máslo, Lukáš (referee)

The work deals with how different behaviors in regard to gender in areas such as altruism and regular support private charities, participation in volunteer activities, social preference and concern for cultural heritage, when an image motivation is on place or is not, and if the behavior is incentivized or not incentivized.
The change of toll taxes and their implications in Czech Republic
Čížková, Michaela ; Rod, Aleš (advisor) ; Brožová, Dagmar (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the changes of toll taxes and their implication in the Czech Republic between years 2007 -- 2015. The research was done using a dynamic regression analysis of monthly data provided by the web portal MYTO CZ. Based on the available data it was shown that the increase in average prices of toll transactions of ecologically unfavorable EURO groups leads to a decline in the share of total realized transactions. As a result carriers are most likely motivated to vehicle fleet renewal, which is reflected in the increase in the share of cars with lower environmental load.
The comparison of productivity of employees in case of using of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
Pecinová, Kateřina ; Houdek, Petr (advisor) ; Chytilová, Helena (referee)
The thesis is an empirical analysis of the effects of intrinsic, extrinsic and negative motivation on the productivity of operators of erotic lines. In a natural experiment, I influenced the structure and size of incentives of 16 employees, in order to determine the optimal management of human resources in the company TOPIC PRESS. The data were evaluated using a regression model with inclusion of identification strategy diff'in'diff. The results show that the performance of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation significantly reduced the number of SMS messages that operators take per hour of 16.6 % and 16.3 % respectively. On the contrary, negative motivation significantly increased the number of SMS/hour by 18 %, but I suppose only a short-term effectiveness. Influence of motivation on the average number of minutes per hour was not confirmed.
Efficiency evaluation of investment incentives in film industry in Czech republic
Boroš, Marek ; Slintáková, Barbora (advisor) ; Daněk, Tomáš (referee)
The goal of my bachelor's thesis is the evaluation of efficiency of investment incentives in the czech film industry. I am presenting description of mechanisms and sources of financing for audiovisual productions, mostly from public sources. The main part of this thesis focuses on the process and efficiency of the "Film Industry Support Programme" which was launched in 2010. This programme was mainly launched because of significant decay of abroad film productions which were shooting in Czech republic and also this programme is handy financing tool for both czech and abroad productions. Furthermore I am presenting a cost - benefit analysis combined with tax - estimating methods to calculate the approximate financial benefits flowing back as public earnings. This analysis is being applied on a tangible pre-budget of an audio-visual project that was supposed to be produced in czech republic and would probably gain a legal right to acquire the programmes incentive.
